As we look towards the future knowing Ron will never be able to return to his former career, our thoughts turn to "what now"? We know Ron's a long way from being able to work full time, but "where do we go from here?"
Everyone needs a reason to get up in the morning; something that makes you feel you are a productive part of society and Ron feels he's been lacking that for quite a while. Now that we are past the "life and death" stage of our journey, he's had a difficult time imagining what the future holds.
We have been praying fervently that God would grant us wisdom as we seek His guidance for the next step in our journey. And as you have joined us in praying (not knowing specifically what the prayer was about), He has answered!
Recently, God really spoke to us through both Pastor Tommy's message, and the worship music. The message was on our spiritual temperature. While his sermon focused on anger, God used it to speak to us about self-focus; something that happens all too easily when you have been living in the midst of a very trying situation. Two songs seemed to be tailored just to our situation.
You can read the words and listen along but you must first copy and paste. For some reason I couldn't get it to link! RATS!

A great reminder that as we seek to hear God, He does speak AND He does have a plan, a purpose and a future for us; even when we can't see it. Something Ron really needed to hear.
After much prayer and consideration, Ron has decided to go back to school. We feel God is leading him towards something in the medical field. There are several options available in this field that will only require an associates degree. Right now, the one that looks most interesting to him is in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ultrasound). Having been on the "other" side of the medical spectrum has given him a unique outlook, along with great empathy and compassion, which we believe will be very helpful for his success. Obviously, he will have to take it slowly, the physical stamina issue is huge, coupled with the mental fatigue. However, a good portion of the classes he will need are available online and also through our local community college, located less than a mile from us.
As we spent many months in hospitals, rehab facilities and doctor's offices after Aaron's accident (8 years ago!), Ron commented often on how he wished he was able to do something in the medical field. Obviously, he could not quit his job and go back to school since we relied on both our incomes to survive!
It's incredible how God has provided this way for him now. No other time would he be able to draw an "income" while going to school; but now that he is receiving disability benefits, he can use his time and energy to concentrate on classes, while our financial needs are being met. Isn't God good???
The last couple of weeks have been filled with admissions, college entrance exam and yes, he even had to attend new student orientation! I won't lie, it's a very daunting endeavor. As you can imagine, our budget is already so tight it squeaks! But, we are choosing to trust and obey as we take this huge step of faith.
And God remains faithful!!! This morning, as we completed registration and held our breath as we clicked on that first tuition payment to be sent, Ron commented "I don't know how we're going to do this but I know God will take care of things!" This afternoon, we received a totally random, very sweet card in the mail. In response to a recent update, this couple was writing to encourage us to "hang in there". Enclosed was a check in the amount of what will basically take care of this semester's tuition and books! We've been keeping these thoughts pretty quiet as we've sought to know this was truly God's plan, so they had NO IDEA we were considering anything like this! AMAZING!!! Thank you so much (you know who your are!) for your generosity, but most of all for your willing obedience to His prompting to send that particular amount at this particular time!
We don't know how this is going to play out, but are choosing to trust Him as He faithfully reveals His plan each step of the way.
He isn't finished with us yet!!! We have a HOPE!

Enough for Today
I had decided this last week of summer vacation was going to be spent relaxing, resting, playing! That is until I noticed the condition of my rose bed; at which point I realized, I had much to do to prepare for life back in the real (working) world as of Monday. UGH!
With great annoyance, this morning I found myself digging trenches, weeding, and doing various other types of yard work. As I sweated (yes, I know most women tend to glisten, but I can assure you this girl SWEATED) and grumbled to the Lord "didn't I just weed this bed two weeks ago?" I swear (actually, I really don't) He laughed and said, "that's exactly how I feel!"
Now, I typically don't mind a little yardwork, in fact I've found that I quite enjoyed it when I would help Ron out, of course it was on my terms then. Whenever I got tired of "helping", I could retreat to the house to other (cooler) more enjoyable things, leaving my strong husband to do the "man's" work. And I still don't mind most things about yardwork (although I hate edging!), I'm perfectly capable and the exercise is good for me; but it's not quite as fun now that the responsibility is mine and I can't just decide I don't want to do it any more! But, I digress...
As He so often does, God began to remind me that my heart is like my rose bed. He tills and sows, waters, provides nutrients and protective ground cover in order to keep out weeds; yet, they always seem to creep back in. As I was working (and did I mention SWEATING!), my mind was multitasking; going in a hundred different directions. Just like those persistent, annoying weeds; uncertainty, doubt, anxiety, and worry began to creep in, causing me to fret...How am I going to keep on top of everything? How will we handle Ron's TPN regimen? Where will I fit in time to spend in the Word? Do we really have to go back to just "surviving" each week instead of joyful anticipation of each new day?
Once again, God spoke. He reminded me of my devotional from a couple of days ago out of, you guessed it, Streams in the Desert 2. L.B. Cowman said
"God does not grant the necessary grace before the trial. He builds the bridge when we reach the river."
She also referenced one of our very favorite promises in Matthew 6; I especially like the way The Message says it:
"Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now and don't get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes."
and the New Living Translation says:
"So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is enough for today."
And with that reminder comes the even greater promise that as we wait and trust in the Lord, He will provide enough for today...whether that be peace, comfort, patience, strength, perseverance..whatever we need. And when tomorrow is today, He will again provide!

Summer update
Hey guys,
It's been a while since I've given an update on Ron, so here ya go!
The last couple of weeks have been a little rough. He's back to yakking every other day or so. Not sure what's up with that; he hasn't been eating more or differently. We're now tweaking some meds; hoping to get things back on an even keel, including adding another med that will battle bacteria buildup in intestines which should lead to decreased yakking.
It was also time to try another decrease in the steroid he takes for adrenal insufficiency, he's now down to 5mg both morning and evening. He's been on steroids since November 2007 when he had adrenal failure as a result of the pancreatitis, sepsis, etc. It's a very slow process of weaning, and hopefully his adrenal glands will eventually kick in.
We thought the decrease was going pretty well, but found out yesterday's blood sugar level was 39 --- YIKES!!!! First step in correcting this issue is to discontinue the small amount of insulin he's on through TPN. Unfortunately, he can't tell when his glucose level drops so low...not a good thing....so I'm on a little higher alert.
He's not doing horribly but it's a bummer to have this little setback. We're very thankful there have been NO HOSPITAL STAYS since April! In fact, he's only had one doctor appointment this summer (in June) and doesn't have to go back until September.
Please pray things will settle down quickly; I would be especially thankful if this were to happen before I return to work next week.
Enjoy these "dog days" of summer! Much love,
Christie

God Goes Before Us
A recurring theme for us throughout the last (almost) 2 years has been "God goes before us and prepares the way". And He is always true to His word!
Though many times our steps falter as we struggle to make our way up hills of uncertainty and through valleys of grief and disappointment, we always KNOW God sees the entire journey. When we have difficulty seeing around the next bend of our winding path, He is there to gently guide us each step of the way. In truth, were we to see these twists and turns, hills and valleys in advance, we would become overhwlemed and discouraged. But, as we trust in Him, we can rest in knowing He knows what is to come.
Our limited vision on this journey of faith, causes us to continually seek His guidance. It teaches us faith and patience to follow Him step by step.
"By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light..." Exodus 13:21
"the Lord your God, who goes before you..." Deuteronomy 1:30
"the Lord your God...went ahead of you on your journey...to search out places for you...to show you the way you should go." Deuteronomy 1:33
"But be assured today that the Lord your God is the one who goes across ahead of you..." Deuteronomy 9:3
"The Lord Himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged."
Deuteronomy 31:8
"...you shall go out for the Lord will go before you..." 2 Samuel 5:24
"You both precede and follow me..." Psalm 139:5 NLT
"For the Lord will go ahead of you, and the God of Israel will protect you from behind." Isaiah 52:12 NLT
"...He is going ahead of you...You will see Him" Matthew 28:7 NLT
"...He walks on ahead of them, and they follow Him because they recognize His voice." John 10:4 NLT
And the ultimate...
"I go to prepare a place for you" John 14:2
....for all eternity!
Yes, God reminds us time and time again that wherever this road takes us – He goes before us and prepares the way. So many experiences have taught us this...circumstances surrounding Ron's transfer to Presby; provision of my room; financial support from family members, friends and complete strangers; the list goes on and on. But, why does He do this? Because He loves us that much!
"And what does the Lord require of you? But to do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with your God" Micah 6:2

Seeking Wisdom
As our family seeks God's direction in several areas of our life we are, once again, asking for some much-needed prayer.
Please pray that as we hear God's voice, we will be obedient to step out in faith and follow; even if (or espcially when) it's out of our comfort zone.
"If the Lord delights in a man's way He makes his steps firm" Psalm 37:23 NIV
"Never move in uncertainty...if uncertain, get quiet and still before God and wait for Him to speak...when at a loss as to know which way to turn, don't turn at all. " Streams in the Desert 2
"Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears wil hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it'." Isaiah 30:21
"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." I Peter 1:5 NIV
"If you need wisdom--if you want to know what God wants you to do--ask Him, and He will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that you really expect Him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. They can't make up their minds. They waver back and forth in everything they do." James 1:5-8 NLT
"...if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding." Proverbs 2:3-6 NIV
Thank you, dear prayer warriors!

Tilled and Sown
"For, behold, I am for you and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown."
Ezekiel 36:9
God doesn't use the plow without intention. Where He plows, He intends to sow. His plowing is proof He is for and not against us. Proof that He thinks we are of value, and worth cultivating. He doesn't waste His plowing on barren soil. He won't plow continually, but only for a time and for a definite purpose....We cannot have the results of the harvest without the process. excerpts from Streams in the Desert 2
I confess I'm a city girl, but, from what I understand, tilling (plowing) requires the soil be disturbed--turned over, cut into, torn up; and should only be done when it will accomplish a useful purpose such as controlling weeds, mixing in nutrients, loosening and aerating...all in preparation of sowing.
In the same way, God tills the soil of our hearts and lives. Often, it's a painful process. I don't know about you, but I don't particularly like being torn up, cut into or turned over. However, I can rest in knowing if God chooses to till, it's for a greater purpose and will only last for a season. Once my "soil" is prepared, He can then weed, aerate (which allows roots to penetrate deeper), and sow. When I allow Him to tend the soil of my heart His seeds begin to germinate; and as I stay rooted in Him I begin to bear His fruit...love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. And this...this is my life's purpose!
As difficult as it may be; I'm thankful He finds me worthy of cultivation. To Him be all glory!

Reality
The dreaded countdown is on...2 1/2 weeks 'til I head back to work!
Oh wait, I choose glass 1/2 full and shout "YIPPEE....2 1/2 more weeks of summer!!!"
I have to say, my favorite part of this summer has been time spent soaking in the Word, allowing God to speak to me. Hope you don't mind indulging me as I share some of these thoughts with you over the next few weeks. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a post out later today
I'm so thankful for the blessing of having summers off, but confess it will be hard to give up this much-needed time of refreshment and rest. It's no fun relinquishing the slower pace of life for a more hectic, time-consuming schedule. Ok, in all honesty I've been spoiled and am going to miss this time with my sweet hubby! I vote early retirement!!! Don't I wish!
I am truly blessed that I have a job and coworkers/friends that I absolutely LOVE. Makes the thought of returning much easier!
Please pray for us as we adjust to a new routine of work/school and juggling Ron's TPN schedule, along with the typical household & yard responsibilities and all other aspects of "the real life".
Much love,
Christie

Lazy Days of Summer
Sorry, this is jumbled ramblings with thoughts all over the place, but I've been trying to get an update out and just decided to spill everything quickly!
First, please be in prayer for Ron. He's been having major back and neck pain for the last 3 days. He thinks he slept wrong Monday night and he's been dealing with muscle spasms ever since. I think he should go to the doctor and get a muscle relaxant but he thinks he can tough it out with just pain meds...such a man!
I'm thoroughly enjoying this summer with my hubby. We're on a very tight budget so pretty much just hang at home, but we have taken advantage of our Star-Telegram Press Pass occasionally which has many buy one get one free deals. Today, we went to the Omni Imax Theater to see Dolphins...anything ocean-related, Ron loves.
Typically, summer has been Ron's busiest time of the year for work; which made it difficult for me since I was off but not able to spend time with him. Since he's unable to work now, I'm blessed with time with him and am relishing this low key, medically uneventful summer. We've had pockets of busy-ness but on the whole it has been pretty restful. Very much appreciated and needed!
We had a great time hanging out with 35 members of the Nordell family as we celebrated Whitney and Jorden's wedding (July 11) with all kinds of fun events. Ron was thrilled to be able to ride along on the front nine of the guys golf outing and then meet up with them later for lunch, while I enjoyed girls' day complete with manicure/pedicure and bridal tea. We all stayed in a hotel in Mesquite for the entire wedding weekend which was a life-saver for us. It would have been very hard on Ron to be trekking back and forth all weekend and also made it much more fun to have all that extra time to spend with family. By Sunday afternoon, he was ready to be in his recliner veggin' in front of the TV.
Travel has become so much easier now that we've got the routine down...our big trip to San Diego went so smoothly, I feel empowered to take on anything and it really makes me wish we'd gone for broke and tried for Hawaii!!!! I've got me a bad case of the travel bug; I'm ready to pack up and go...Anywhere! Now, if only money weren't the issue!!! It's always something, right?!
Last weekend we were incredibly blessed by friends from church who came over and did a great job repairing our fence and trimming trees! Many thanks to Becky, Rusty, Kyle, Debbie, Cary and all the kids who pitched in...not only did you bless us by working, but it was a treat just to hang out with you! Thanks for giving up your Sunday afternoon for us.
We are thankful for each of you!!!
Much love,
Christie
“…those who have reason to be thankful should continually sing praises to the Lord.” James 5:13b NLT
This verse causes me to reflect on my devotional reading this morning (Streams in the Desert 2)
"Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives" Matthew 26:30 NLT
The only record of Jesus singing is this account. Yes, the Bible said He sang...despite knowing what was to come--His darkest night of life here on earth. But the joy of doing His Father's will was cause for joy in His heart...there was gladness in His heart buried beneath all His griefs and sorrows.
We, too, must learn to sing as we enter our "Gethsemane". Often, we sing as we work; we sing as we rejoice; but can we sing as we suffer? It's difficult to sing when you can't see beyond your trial; but the secret is to look beyond the immediate circumstance and see the glory to come.
“But as for me, I will sing about your power. I will shout with joy each morning because of Your unfailing love. For You have been my refuge, a place of safety in the day of distress. O my Strength, to You I sing praises, for You, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.” Psalm 59:16-17 NLT
“My heart is confident in You, O God; no wonder I can sing Your praises!” Psalm 108:1 NLT

All Good Things Must Come to an End--BOO!
Yes, we're home safe and sound after a very successful vacation! Sorry for taking so long in getting out an update. It's been hard to come back to the real world...especially since our high temps were in the mid-70's all week. You read that right, the HIGH was in the mid-70's! No sense dwelling on it, though...back to the wonderful Texas heat and on to your update! Be prepared, it’s a long one!
We left Anaheim on Wednesday, June 24 and headed south. The drive on Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1) down to San Diego was so pretty. We stopped in Laguna Beach for a late lunch at a great restaurant that sits on the cliffs overlooking the ocean, (thanks, Mark, for the tip to check out Las Brisas!), and walked around enjoying the scenery a bit. We then headed down to Torrey Pines where, of course, we had to stop to check out the golf course and Ron had to buy a new golf cap from the Pro Shop since he (conveniently?) inadvertently neglected to pack any caps. We also enjoyed watching hang gliders take off of the cliffs and glide up and down the coastline. Beautiful! We continued on, driving through La Jolla and many other beachside towns before arriving in San Diego .
Our bungalow at Paradise Point overlooked the bay where we were able to watch the sunset each night. Paradise Point sits in a great location on Mission Bay within 10-15 minutes of all the places we wanted to check out while in Southern California . We stayed very busy, but it was definitely relaxing and so very nice to have such a beautiful change of scenery.
Ron did great!!! It was wise to have a wheelchair with us throughout the trip, although a little tiring for me, well worth it to save Ron the exertion and allow him to be out longer. We decided to splurge and rent a motorized scooter at San Diego Zoo and again at Sea World--what a life-saver! I would have died trying to get him up and down the terrain, especially at the Zoo; I was already feeling the pain from the two days I had spent pushing him around Disneyland and California Adventure and we still had several days to go!
We visited Sea World, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Animal Wildlife Park , Coronado Island , Gaslamp Quarter and took a harbor cruise. We even visited the Gaslamp Quarter Strip Club one night. GASP!!! Yes! I said strip club!!! But, no, not THAT kind of strip club...this was a steak place where you cook your own steaks on grills set up around the restaurant. You choose the steak (get it, strip steak--strip club), season it with any of the multitude of seasonings provided, and stand around with everyone else grilling! (they advise you on how long to cook depending on how you like your steak) Quite fun! We ate at so many unique places. We like to watch the Food Network and had seen a "Tasty Travels" episode where Rachel Ray had gone to San Diego, so tried out several of the places she recommended; which took us to many fun places to explore.
The boy ate like CRAZY and handled it pretty well! A couple of nights he felt kind of icky and one morning had a very sudden yakking episode, but otherwise things were good. He slept in each day; we typically didn't get out until close to noon and tried to be in by early evening so he could have plenty of down time, but I know I brought home one VERY TIRED pup!
No problems with PICC line, huge relief for me. He even got in the hot tub one day and then a quick dip in the pool, as well. Before we left we had found a pharmacy that had a special rubber "sleeve" that covers 3/4 of his arm (including PICC line) and also has a device that sucks out all the air to make it watertight. Worked very well.
We were blessed abundantly by everyone we encountered throughout our travels. Again, on the plane home they moved us to a bulkhead row with an empty seat between us despite the plane being packed tight otherwise! Paradise Point even provided us an extra mini-fridge to ensure we had plenty of room to store TPN, protein drinks and other medical supplies and still have room for anything else we might want to keep cold. Only small incident we encountered was on the day we were leaving; I took our sharps container to the desk when we checked out for them to dispose of and they were a little freaked out as to what to do with it. They finally decided I needed to turn it over directly to security! Quite comical, I thought!
Ron has spent a good portion of this last week resting/recuperating (slept about 14 hours a couple of days), while I played catch-up on laundry, yardwork and general household stuff, as well as spending as much time as possible with my sister, Tami, and her family while they were here for a few days (they live in Georgia). Thanks, Deb & Charles for being so willing to have an open door policy at your new house (and especially pool!) We've all had a great week together.
Ron's looking very good, and actually gained 5 pounds while we were away! He really pushed the envelope but is back to only eating once a day along with his typical protein drinks and continues on TPN 12 hours a night. He's only had one yakking episode since returning home. He still has a very long way to go but we are encouraged by his progress. He has not gained muscle mass and continues to lack stamina and endurance, but is now able to walk about 15-20 minutes before requiring rest and usually doesn't need to nap much. Stairs are still very hard for him, his leg muscles get really shaky when he has to walk them. He typically sleeps about 12 hours a night. Physical therapy was put on the back burner since returning home to allow him to recuperate from our big adventure, but it's time to whip him back into routine. Now that it's gotten so hot, we've had to cut out his daily outdoor walks so we need to come up with another plan of action to keep him physically active, we don't need any backward trends. I know he's really wanting to get out on the driving range to see how his body would tolerate swinging a club, but he'll have to wait 'til things cool down a bit.
For the first time in almost 2 years we enjoyed lunch out with friends after church today! Thanks Troy, Sherry and Tanner for this special treat...so good to spend time with you. And so wonderful that Ron has progressed to the point that we are able to do this! God is GOOD!!!
We have another busy weekend ahead, family wedding next Saturday (Whitney and Jorden, the BIG day is almost here!!!). We'll be gone a couple of days enjoying bridal luncheon/girls day, rehearsal dinner, wedding and just general spending time with our extended family! Always a great time!
I've reflected often over the last few weeks on Isaiah 30:18
"..the Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for Him."
He is exceedingly gracious to us in so many ways! And you are all a huge part of His graciousness towards us!
Thanks for praying for a good trip! God was faithful to answer! We appreciate each of you!

Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho to Disneyland We Go!
We've spent the last two days at "the happiest place on Earth"; and I can attest, we've been very happy!!! But, I tell ya, the boy has gone WILD!!! He's really been pressing his luck by eating breakfast, lunch and dinner each day! (Amazingly, no ill effects!) And he has spent each entire day at Disney...having the wheelchair has been a lifesaver, not only is it allowing Ron to rest, and get us to the front of most lines!... but I'm getting quite a workout....sculpting those thighs and buns of steel with all this uphill pushing. It's been worth every minute!
After a restful morning, we leave our hotel Wednesday and will take the scenic route (Highway 1) from Laguna Beach to San Diego.

California or bust!
The day has arrived! Despite a very early start (had to be at DFW by 6:30AM) and a panic attack on my part last night; we made it safe and sound. Yes, I confess; I got a little freaked out while packing. I allowed Satan to distract me with those dreaded "what ifs" and began to focus on circumstances, instead of God's promise that He goes before us and prepares the way. I know whatever happens, wherever we are; He is always with us!
"Jesus is going ahead of you...you will see him here." Mark 16:7 NLT
We have definitely felt God's smile on us all day! I'm amazed at how smoothly things went...the airport personnel were all phenomenal! Not only helpful, but, oh so kind and courteous as they went out of their way to meet our needs. We were whisked straight through security and at the gate, the ticket agent moved us to a bulkhead row with an empty seat between us for added comfort!
We met a precious young lady (L), who was just returning from a month long mission trip to Guatemala who felt God leading her to pray over Ron; believing God will bring about complete healing.
We arrived at the Santa Ana airport at 9AM where we were greeted with the same courtesy and helpfulness. When I went to pick up our rental, we were upgraded to a Jeep Grand Cherokee due to lack of vehicles in the class we requested when redeeming our miles; perfect for carting the wheelchair along with all our bags!
We drove around a little to get our bearings, stopped at the Vitamin Shoppe to pick up Ron's protein drinks and then decided at noon to stop at our hotel to see if there was a possibilty of an early check-in. Unfortunately, they did not have any rooms available with 2 doubles, but if we didn't mind a king..... I told them we had actually requested a king so she was happy to give us a room that was ready (4 hours early!!!) God is Good!!!
After a quick rest for Ron while I unpacked; we headed out to drive around and see the sights. We drove to both Newport Beach and Laguna Beach before heading back to the hotel for an early dinner. We are chilling in the room tonight, preparing for our first big day at Disneyland tomorrow!
Have a wonderful week! I will try (no promises!) to update sometime during the week!
Love, Christie

It's here!!! Ron tells his story
Love it when my hubby shares!. Though a very condensed version, Ron eloquently shared with our youth group a few weeks ago. Below are his th...
